Hawks Fade as Tigers Pounce

BOX HILL have lost in extraordinary fashion against finals hopefuls Werribee in the AFL Victoria Development League at Victoria Park on Saturday Morning.

The game, like the weather changed constantly and was a game of two halves with the Hawks falling at the last hurdle to record their third loss for the season.

After leading for the whole game, it was a final minute goal to the Tigers that gifted them the win 9.13 (67) to 9.10 (64).

The conditions were typically Melbourne with the sun beaming down in the opening half with the game finishing in the pouring rain.

The Hawks used the initial settings to their full advantage kicking out to a 27-point lead at the first break, thanks to straight shooting and lack of execution from Werribee.

Delivery was something that was highlighted early and the Hawks were on top in the disposal and efficiency categories.

The second quarter yielded only three goals with the Tigers seemingly holding on to stay in the contest, Box Hill looking the classier team.

Development Coach Kevin Collins was scathing of the opportunities, despite their inability to use it, which were gifted to the Tigers.

It was a role-reversal after the main break as the Tigers held the possession and attacked their goals, holding the buffer to 17-points, kicking 2.6 to 2.4.

The Hawks lifted early in the last thanks to Kalem Post, Corey Cassidy and Peter McEvoy, the latter taking a screamer to rival any this year.

But the Werribee boys were persistent and used the ball well when it counted, something that they lacked throughout the first half.

The movement was commendable in the horrendous conditions and the Tigers posted 3.4 whilst holding the Hawks to only 0.2.

It took Werribee 30 minutes into the final quarter to hit the front thanks to a snap around the body out of congestion, with the siren ringing at the next bounce.

Box Hill still hold top spot on the ladder with four rounds to go, who play Coburg on July 27 at Box Hill City Oval.
