Club Statement: Cherie O’Neill

The Box Hill Hawks wish to advise that Cherie O’Neill has resigned from her role as VFLW Senior Coach.

O’Neill joined the Hawks in 2021 and guided the team to back-to-back finals appearances in 2022 and 2023.

Not only that, but O’Neill was instrumental in building a first-class VFLW program and oversaw the success of the VFLW licence handover from Hawthorn to Box Hill this year.

Box Hill General Manager Pat Clancey thanked O’Neill for her tireless service to the club.

“Cherie has been a much-loved member of our football club since the moment she arrived,” Clancey said.

“As VFLW Senior Coach, she gave our players many fond memories and forged strong bonds with everyone she came across, making finals in the last two seasons and having 19 players drafted to AFLW under her tutelage.

“We respect her decision to pursue other opportunities and wish her and her family all the best for whatever comes next.

“She will always be a part of the Hawks family.”

O’Neill thanked the Hawks for their support of her coaching journey over the years.

“This was a really tough decision to make and one I didn’t take lightly,” O’Neill said.

“I have unforgettable memories that I will cherish forever during my time at Box Hill and I can’t thank the players and staff enough for welcoming me with open arms and supporting me through thick and thin.

“I wish the club all the best for the future.”

Box Hill will now begin the process of appointing a new VFLW Senior Coach for the 2024 season.
