Mackie Signs On

Box Hill Hawks are delighted to confirm the signing of former Glenelg and Collingwood half back Liam Mackie for the 2018 VFL season.

Still just 19, Mackie brings a wealth of senior football experience that belies his years and, having spent 2017 on the Magpies’ rookie list, is keen to impress now that he’s traded black and white for brown and gold.

“I’m pretty excited (to join Box Hill).

“Obviously, coming from Collingwood last season, its a new and different environment for me, but the boys have been really welcoming and I’m looking forward to cracking into some footy.

“Speaking to people in the industry, they all spoke so highly of the affiliation between Box Hill and Hawthorn, so hopefully a strong season will help get me back into an AFL system.”

Mackie’s signing is the perfect endorsement of the Hawks’ long-held philosophy of – and focus on – providing pathways, and if his performance and training standards during pre-season are any indication he already looks a shrewd acquisition.

“My pre-season thus far has been very solid.

“There have been a couple pretty hot days, and its a hard balance now that I’m working during the day, but aside from a slight but manageable setback with my groin it’s gone really well.”

Mackie sees his ability to read the play across half back, use of the ball by foot and capacity to set up the field ahead as strengths, but it might be his attitude and professionalism that proves to be the greatest benefit.

“I’ll always try to make a good, positive impact within the group, both on and away from the field and be the best player that I can be.

“And, hopefully, in however big or small way I can help others when and where possible to do the same.”
