David Mirra Re-signs for Season 2016
On Thursday night, Box Hill Hawks’ captain David Mirra signed a contract that will see him remain at the club throughout season 2016.
The captain of the VFL’s Team of the Year hopes that his recommitment will send a positive message to the Hawks’ playing group.
“I think it’s really important we can keep the group together over a number of years – it gives us the best chance of success. Hopefully by signing now, it sends a message to the playing group that I’m on board,” he said.
Despite leading the group to a minor premiership, and his own personal success, the 24-year-old remains hungry for improvement.
“I want to keep playing at the highest level possible and keep improving my football. There is just a great opportunity available for us all to learn, develop, and be successful at this football club,” he said.
“I have a personal goal of playing 100 senior games for this club, and if all goes well in terms of injury and form, I will hopefully achieve that next year.”
Mirra debuted for Box Hill in 2010 – winning a best and fairest the same year. His passion for football and the club’s development has been a constant driver throughout his six seasons as a Hawk.
“I’m excited about the direction that the club is heading, and I want to be a part of helping it grow in any way I can,” he said.
Box Hill Hawks’ General Manager Chris Nanni shares Mirra’s excitement, and spoke highly of the skipper’s ability to drive the club’s culture.
Mirra’s re-signing is key for the club. He has been a valuable player over a very long period of time, and his leadership and experience both on and off the field have been some of his greatest strengths, he said.
“Mirra drives the strong culture we have here at the club.”
David Mirra will lead the Hawks into a preliminary final against Sandringham tomorrow at North Port Oval.
