Development: Golden Point Denies Hawks Premiership

BOX Hill Hawks have suffered their first loss of the year, after a thrilling grand final against Williamstown ended in a golden-point defeat at North Port Oval.

Saturday’s result inflicted the squad’s fourth successive Grand Final loss, but captain Liam Tobin is adamant it won’t dishearten the group as it moves forward.

“As a group we will learn a lot from the match. It will burn in the off-season, but it will no doubt fuel our desire during preseason and throughout next year,” said Tobin.

The Hawks looked to be flying as they kicked the first three goals of the match, but their 14-point quarter-time lead had turned into a two-point deficit by the main-break.

Ryan Exon, Julian Soccio and Sam Gibson had standout defensive performances, but by the three-quarter-time break the Seagulls had extended their lead to nine points.

Head coach Matt Adolph was calm and reassuring during his final address, asking the group to continue to play selfless football.

“Play your role. All I want is an honest effort from all 23 of you – the scoreboard will look after itself,” said Adolph.

Xavier Dimasi kicked the first goal of the final-term to bring the Hawks back within three points, before Matthew Traynor leveled the game during time-on.

The Hawks surged forward as the match entered golden-point territory, but were unable to find a target inside-50. Williamstown rebounded, and a behind from a set-shot was enough to deny Box Hill a premiership.

“The boys showed great resilience to force the game to golden point, however we weren’t able to get the score on the board,” said Tobin.

“It was a disappointing end to a fantastic season, but Williamstown was able to restrict our ball movement and scoring opportunities throughout the day.”

Despite Saturday’s result, the Hawks’ exceptional season should be commended, and coach Matt Adolph praised the group during the post-match ceremony.

“I couldn’t have asked to coach a better bunch of blokes, I am proud of you all, said Adolph.
