Hawks launch 2023 Indigenous Guernsey

The Box Hill Hawks are pleased to unveil our 2023 Indigenous Guernsey.

Designed by indigenous artist Alkina Edwards, the jumper will be worn in the Clubs’ VFL match against Essendon on Sunday and our VFLW engagement with North Melbourne on Saturday.

Edwards is the cousin of Box Hill Hawks spearhead Jaylon Thorpe and a close friend of VFLW Co-Vice Captain Jordy Mifsud. She has produced a striking and beautiful design which, fittingly, complements the Club’s 2022 Indigenous Guernsey by virtue of how distinct they are from one another.

Edwards described the story of her jumper as one of heritage and place.

“Within the design I have included the hawk prominently, while Bunjil the eagle sits in the top right – which represents the creator of the Wurundjeri people.

“The gathering circles represent the Club, its people, their connection with one another and the indigenous communities which surround Box Hill while showing strength and unity.

“In the background I have placed elements which represent the Yarra River, known as Birarung or ‘a place of mist and shadows.’”

The Box Hill Hawks are thrilled with the final product and look forward to wearing it proudly this weekend.
