HARD FOUGHT VICTORY FOR THE HAKWS

Box Hill has claimed a 15-point victory in their Grand Final Rematch against Williamstown at Burbank Oval yesterday.

With both teams bringing a tough and physical game, Box Hill managed to overcome their opponents when it counted.

The day started well for Box Hill, with the first goal kicked by O’Rourke coming from a Williamstown turnover. Fisher quickly followed for our second, with Whitecross setting up Jones for our third major of the day.

Williamstown’s first goal came 13 minutes into the first quarter, and from here, their forward pressure really stepped up. With the increase in pressure, Williamstown managed to increase our turnovers to 11 for the quarter.

The second quarter saw Williamstown maintain their pressure, creating scoring shots very early on. Missed tackles and defensive spoils by Box Hill meant Williamstown continued to chip away at our lead. A great goal by Heatherley, set up by work through the midfield of Mirra, saw Box Hill’s last goal in the final minutes of the quarter. Whilst Miller-Lewis, Whitecross and Mirra provided strong defensive efforts, Williamstown managed to find themselves leading at the main break.

Williamstown shot out of the blocks in the third quarter slotting their first goal within 30 seconds. Hardwick provided Box Hill’s reply with a great shot along the deck. Stewart kicking our second, and a 50-meter penalty to Kidd enabled another quick goal by Lovell.

Williamstown fired straight back with two goals in quick succession, but Box Hill’s great movement from one end of the ground to the other kept scores almost even. Two late goals by Williamstown put them ahead once again leading into the last change.

Box Hill had a slow start to the final quarter with some missed opportunities however a strong mark by Burton within the forward 50 provided our first goal of the quarter and got us within four points of our opponents.

Strong pressure displayed by Box Hill enabled good scoring opportunities kicking four goals to none allowing Box Hill to eventually come out on top, on what was a hard fought victory.

Box Hill Hawks Captain David Mirra spoke with boxhillhawks.com.au after the game about the winning performance by the boys yesterday.

“It’s a great feeling….the guys just kept persisting and in the end we were able to run over the top of them…and now we’re 2-0 and we’ve had a good start to the season.”

Next week Box Hill take on Coburg at Pirahna Oval in the ANZAC Round.
