The Box Hill Hawks Development Squad charged through the second round with a 26-point victory over the reigning premiers of the development division, the Williamstown Seagulls.
After suffering a heartbreaking, 1-point loss in the 2015 Grand Final, the boys had a score to settle and from the first bounce they were in control of the game.
‘We knew we had a big job to do so we were switched on from the first bounce,’ said Xavier Dimasi.
The first quarter of the game seemed to fly by as Jake Summers, Sam Smith and Julian Soccio kicked 4 goals between them, Williamstown only scoring one late in the quarter.
‘It was guys like Summers and Smith who are learning that forward structure who really got our team playing around each other,’ said Dimasi
Heading into the second quarter with a 27-point margin, Box Hill were the dominant force in the game. Goals by Ben McIntyre and James Sullivan kept Box Hill in the lead however Williamstown retaliated, matching our two goals with their own.
By the 20th minute of the third quarter Williamstown had kicked 3 goals to Box Hill’s one by Liam Cox. The lapse in the third quarter saw the margin shrink to 18-points by the end of the 3rd quarter.
‘In our lapses, our structure and communication fall down and that’s what gets us.’ Said Dimasi.
Going into the last quarter of the game the boys rose to the challenge. Dimasi, McIntyre and Sullivan kicked a goal apiece, again only to be answered by one Williamstown goal.
When the final siren sounded the margin was 26-points, Box Hill walking away with a good win.
‘It was a good reward for effort,’ says Dimasi. ‘The boys put in some solid work today and to get the win down at Burbank Oval is a big stepping stone for us.’
Looking forward to the coming weekend, Box Hill will be up against Coburg and while the boys are going into the game confident after yesterdays win they are aware of the challenges Coburg presents.
‘I’d like to think that we can be pretty confident heading into next weeks game but, I really think we have to being our A game otherwise it could be interesting,’ says Dimasi.
The Development Squad will be taking on the Coburg Lions next Saturday at Piranha Park kicking off the day’s action at 10:45am.
