Grand Final Team Selection

A former Club captain, Irish up-and-comer and developing young gun headline the possible ins for Chris Newman’s Box Hill Hawks ahead of Sunday’s Grand Final against Casey.

David Mirra, the man who lifted the cup in 2013 and featured in the senior AFL Hawks’ Semi-Final a week ago, has been named in a back pocket, and shapes as a crucial addition to an already in form back six.

It was only four weeks ago that the veteran – who holds the Club record for games as captain – featured in a forward role against the Demons, booting three vital goals and having a hand in half a dozen more on the way to an impressive win.

Irish flyer Conor Nash joins Mirra in the extended squad. If he plays it’ll be his first appearance for the VFL side since Round 18’s win over Collingwood, with a superb middle third of the season seeing the code convert handed a senior debut and an extended run in Alastair Clarkson’s 22.

It was at Etihad Stadium that Nash announced himself as a player to watch, with his excellent display against Footscray in Round 14 winning him best afield honours and putting him on the map for senior elevation.

First year midfielder James Worpel joins the list of possible ins, with his last outing in the Box Hill Brown and Gold a 34-disposal, 8 clearance, one goal game back in Round 15.

The youngster has enjoyed a stellar year at both reserve and senior level and would, like David Mirra, be a welcome addition come Grand Final day.

Michael Knoll is the fourth and final inclusion, with the hard-working, bullocking ruck a potential foil for number one big man Marc Pittonet.

Knoll is known best for his competitive streak and uncanny ability to rack up extraordinary tackle numbers around the stoppage, a skill that would no doubt be handy in a hotly contested midfield battle.

As yet no one from the 23 who accounted for Williamstown last weekend has been omitted, with a final trimming of the 27 who are currently named to take place on Saturday, before being formalised prior to the first bounce.

Tickets for the clash can be purchased at the gate or via this link, with prices set at $23 for adults $16 for valid concession holders, with children under the age of 15 admitted free of charge.

Whilst all seating is General Admission, the Hawks Cheer Squad will be located at Level 1 Aisle 48-1, with a Brown and Gold supporter’s bay at Level 1 Aisle 11-12.
