Box Hill has overcome its first major challenge of the Development League season on Saturday, kicking two goals in the final two minutes to seize a nine-point victory against Port Melbourne.
The victory leaves the Hawks undefeated from six games and sitting second behind fellow undefeated team Williamstown, setting up arguably the match of the season after both teams return from the bye.
Box Hill City Oval was in raptures as Cadeyn Williams kicked his third goal with a classy checkside to claim the lead with only a minute left to play, before Dalton Graham slotted a free kick after the siren to cap off the sterling win.
Despite being convincing winners in the first five games of the season, the Hawks were behind the eight ball for most of the day, trailing at the first two breaks and then by a game-high 18 points deep into the third quarter.
Facing the prospect of their first blemish of the season, the Hawks rallied late to kick three goals to finally level the scores at the last change.
With the momentum behind the following the final 10 minutes of the third, the Hawks continued to make their charge, kicking the first three goals of the final quarter while Port squandered their opportunities, to establishing a 15-point lead.
Such was the nature of the match, Port Melbourne made one final push to upset the home team, kicking three consecutive goals of their own to steal the lead back at the 27-minute mark.
The Hawks were up to the challenge though, with the final two goals enough to claim the four points.
Box Hill will now have a bye in both competitions before the much-anticipated set of clashes against Williamstown on Sunday, 21 June, with both teams sitting first and second in both competitions.
