Club Statement: 2021 VFL Season

The Box Hill Hawks welcome the AFL’s announcement last week regarding the re-shaping of the second-tier competition in 2021.

While 2020 has presented significant challenges to the club, sound management has ensured Box Hill is well placed to bounce back from these challenges and embrace the opportunities a re-shaped second-tier competition presents.

The club has been in consistent and productive dialogue with its fellow VFL clubs and the AFL throughout 2020 and look forward to that continuing.

Box Hill Hawks President Ed Sill said the club is excited to continue this collaboration and work together to shape the second-tier competition in 2021.

“We’re excited to collaborate with AFL Victoria, the AFL and fellow clubs to re-shape the country’s premier second tier competition,” said Sill.

“Importantly, in what remains a source of great strength and certainty, we look forward to continuing our 20-plus-year alignment with the Hawthorn Football Club.

“Our shared commitment to providing our players and staff with an elite development program and pathway remains… and we eagerly look forward to sharing more details about the 2021 VFL season as they’re confirmed.”

Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves highlighted the importance of the partnership between Hawthorn and Box Hill Hawks.

“Hawthorn and Box Hill have enjoyed a successful partnership for nearly 20 years now and it is an incredibly important relationship for both clubs.

“The alignment has seen both clubs achieve tremendous success together and our relationship remains strong as we face one of the most difficult periods in our collective history.

“With the announcement of a new amalgamated VFL competition, combining the NEAFL and VFL into one league, we will work with Box Hill regarding how our affiliation can continue to achieve success for both clubs in 2021 and beyond.”
