DEV: Hawks remain undefeated after preying on Seagulls

Box Hill remains undefeated in the Development League after a crushing 55-point victory over the previously undefeated Williamstown at Burbank Oval on Sunday.

The Hawks showed their intent right from the get-go, kicking the opening five goals of the game to stun the home team.

Chris Jones was once again dominant up forward, with the key forward booting a game-high four goals while smalls Dalton Graham and Aidan Franetic also got in on the fun with three goals each.

Williamstown simply had no answer in the opening quarter, taking until the final minutes of the quarter to register their first goal, by which stage, Box Hill had already registered five of their own.

With the match being built as the clash of the undefeated heavyweights, the second quarter produced a contest that lived up to the billing. Kicking five goals apiece, the Seagulls managed to get the margin down to as much as 14 points during the fast-paced term.

For all of Williamstown’s efforts, the Hawks managed maintain a level playing field as Franetic’s goal with the last kick of the quarter resulted in Box Hill claiming the quarter by a solitary point and holding a 24-point lead at the main break.

In contrast to the second, neither team could score as freely in the third quarter, however, it was the Seagulls who had the early running as they kicked the opening two goals to bring the margin back under two goals for the first time since the first quarter.

With the challenge thrown down by the Seagulls, the Hawks responded in predatory fashion with Graham and Webster kicking goals within five minutes before McEvoy kicked truly after the siren to establish a more comfortable 30-point lead at the final change.

Having already had two charges halted by the Hawks, Williamstown couldn’t muster a final challenge in the final quarter as Box Hill ran rampant, booting five goals to one to claim top spot from Williamstown and remain the sole undefeated team in the Development League.

The Hawks will now travel to North Port Oval on Sunday, 28 June as they face off against rivals Port Melbourne at 12pm, with the Boroughs providing the Hawks with their stiffest challenge of the season only a few weeks ago at Box Hill City Oval.
