Dominant Round 1 Win for Senior Box Hill Side

The Senior Box Hill Hawks side have started the 2016 season with a big win over Sandringham at City Oval yesterday. Leading at every change, the Hawks walked away 37-point winners at the end of the day.

After a significant defeat at the hands of Sandringham in their second practice match, and the Blue Ribbon Cup on the line, Box Hill were determined to improve on their recent form.

Starting the game strong, the Hawks won the first quarter and ended with a two-goal lead. David Mirra and Tom Gordon showed great defensive work early, each laying significant tackles in the term.

The boys then stepped up their work-rate in the second quarter for a dominant five goal to two term, capped off by a great team goal 21 minutes in.

The second half of the match saw work efforts of both teams improve at both ends of the ground. Kurt Heatherley proved strong defensively with a couple of solid marks, whilst Tim O’Brien laid a great tackle in our forward half, putting Box Hill’s pressure on display yet again.

Both Box Hill and Hawthorn listed players equally contributed to yesterday’s win, with Sam Iles named the team’s Player of the Match.

Tom Gordon spoke with boxhillhawks.com.au after the match about the Round 1 result.

“Obviously coming off the big loss in the practice match, coming in to this game we were pretty anxious to get a good start and to get the four points in the end, in the way we did, was really rewarding.”

“The first ten minutes of the first quarter – I guess we set it up from there. The intensity and the work rate of everyone in the first half was unbelievable and then to back it up in the second half was great.”
