Soccio Relishing Pre-Season

With three Senior games under his belt, 21 year old Julian Soccio, is keen to “hit the ground running…” for the upcoming season, as he did for the Intra-Club match played on Monday at Waverley Park.

“It was a bit of an eye opener…” said Soccio, “… and weird to be running out against players you would normally see on TV.”

Soccio was one of many Box Hill Hawks who played in the Intra-Club match, along with Joseph Fisher and Xavier Dimasi.

“It was a great opportunity for a few of the Box Hill boys to stand up against some AFL greats.”

Being a die-hard Hawks fan, Soccio describes playing with some of the AFL greats as “a bit of a weird feeling… but relishing the opportunity to play with some of my idols.”

With Round 1 of the VFL season coming up fast, match conditioning is at the top of Soccio’s mind.

“I’ve just got to put my head down and not worry about anything else. You just can’t get enough match conditioning.”

Fitness is something Soccio has been working hard on over past seasons, but his sights are now turning towards bigger achievements.

“My first two years was about building a solid fitness base, but going into my third year now, I’m just really working on my size and building up my frame. So far I’ve been reaping the benefits.”

A “nervous but excited” Soccio is gearing up for the next practice match to be played against Sandringham at the Trevor Baker Oval on Sunday. With their last clash ending with a 23 point win for Box Hill; the team is looking to remain on top before the start of the season.
