SENIORS: Hawks take the sting out of Casey

THE Box Hill Hawks are perched at the top of the VFL ladder after defeating an eighth-placed Casey Scorpions by 74 points on Sunday.

Speaking before the game, Head Coach Marco Bello expected a tight battle and a good opportunity to start preparing for finals.

“We need to start preparing for finals now. The way we play and the way we think – there are a lot of areas we want to improve,” he said.

An impressive crowd gathered at City Oval to celebrate Kids’ Day and watched as the Hawks entered the quarter-time break with a 14-point lead.

Patrick Lawlor kicked the first goal of the match and finished with four to accompany his 25 disposals and best-on-ground performance. While Brendan Whitecross kicked the Hawks’ second and would go on to gather a game-high 20 kicks.

By half time the Hawks had doubled their lead to 28 points and looked likely to stretch the margin further if they could tame the windy conditions and kick straight.

Marc Pittonet gave his rovers first use out of the ruck contests, feeding Sam Iles and Jonathan Simpkin as they continued their great midfield work in the absence of Alex Woodward.

At three-quarter time Bello challenged the Hawks to play selfless football and extend their 64-point lead.

The squad responded to claim an important 74-point win and maintain the best defensive record in the league – keeping its opposition to less than 10 goals for the fourth week in a row.

Continuity is an important dynamic to any football team and the Box Hill Hawks seem to have established a strong defensive unit that compliments a potent forward line.

“It’s all about a defensive mindset and a settled back 6,” Bello said.

The Box Hill Hawks will be hoping to extend their lead at the top of the ladder when they travel to Simonds Stadium this Saturday to take on Geelong.
