Port Melbourne Prove Too Strong For The Hawks
The Box Hill Hawks suffered a devastating 16-point loss against the Port Melbourne Boroughs on Saturday at North Port Oval, losing their third consecutive match.
In extremely muddy conditions, the Hawks were in the contest right up until the final quarter. After a tough tug of war all day, the Boroughs showed their grit and determination to earn the four points.
The first quarter saw Box Hill take control of the game. Their intent was clear, leading the tackle count 30 to 6, and almost doubling Port Melbourne’s possessions for the quarter.
The second term saw the Boroughs return with a renewed effort. Winning the contested ball and dominating the hitouts, Port Melbourne were able to get first use of the ball and work it into their forward 50 14 times to Box Hill’s 10.
Box Hill returned strong in the third quarter, however Port Melbourne managed to come out on top. The Hawks were able to move the ball inside 50 nine times for the quarter, but kicking six behinds proved costly.
Box Hill’s Liam Kidd spoke to boxhillhawks.com.au after the match about the disappointing loss.
“We had the ball in our forward half for the majority but we just didn’t convert, myself included.”
“Our second quarters have let us down over the past month but I feel like we stayed in it today. I don’t think there was one area in particular that let us down, we just need to take some more opportunities.”
“There’s still plenty of belief between the boys and we just need to find another gear and keep going.”
The Box Hill Hawks VFL team have a bye next week but return on the 9th July when they take on Williamstown at Box Hill City Oval.
