Development Go Down Against Tough Northern Blues

The Box Hill Hawks Development side were unable to walk away with a win yesterday going down to the Northern Blues by 13 points.

The Blues were first to make a mark on the scoreboard however Box Hill’s Sam Gibson was quick to answer providing Box Hill with an early lead.

By the end of the first quarter it appeared as though Box Hill were in control of the game dominating the quarter with 92 possessions to the Blues 72.

The second quarter saw the rain appear and while Box Hill displayed excellent pressure on the ball carrier leading the tackles 13-7, the Hawks struggled to keep the ball inside their forward 50.

By half time the Blues had booted another 4 goals to Box Hill’s two giving them a 14-point lead.

Heading into the second half of the game both sides managed 95 possessions for the quarter however it was Box Hill’s rushed decision making that let them down.

Dominating the tackle count 60-34 by the end of the match, the Hawks were unable to translate their effort onto the scoreboard with the Blues capitalising on Box Hill’s slipups securing a 13 point margin at the final siren and walking away with the four points.

Liam Cavanagh spoke to after the game.

‘The decision-making was poor. We had plenty of the ball but we just didn’t use it correctly and make the right decisions.’

‘We didn’t really adapt to the wet weather well, the tough conditions is no excuse though’.

‘We really overused the handballs and in the wet conditions we needed to get the ball forward and lock it in by slowing down the game and looking for players instead of kicking into space which we did a lot of in the last quarter.’

‘We didn’t do what we were required to do and the Blues were able to take advantage of this’.

Next Saturday the boys are keen to get back on top as they head to Frankston Oval to take on the Frankston Dolphins at 11:00am.
