Mirra and O’Donnell Re-sign

The Box Hill Hawks are excited to announce that Captain and Best and Fairest winner David Mirra and fourth year player Mitchell O’Donnell have re-signed and will play on with the club for the 2017 season.

After a tough year for both players, Box Hill could not be more pleased that both players have decided to play on in the brown and gold.

As one of the most respected Captains in the league, as seen by his appointment as Vice-Captain of the state team this year, Box Hill will again benefit tremendously from Mirra’s leadership and football knowledge.

Now in his third year as the skipper of the Hawks, Mirra is only the fourth player to have captained Box Hill on more than 50 occasions.

After his seventh year at the club, Mirra still continues to improve and impress with his football. Playing 18 games in 2016, Mirra was named in Box Hill’s best players in 12 of those matches and was named this year’s Col Austen Trophy winner.

Mirra also reached a significant milestone this season, playing his 100th VFL game in the club’s Round 7 match against Casey, a feat achieved by very few players.

O’Donnell has also had a significant season. After rupturing his ACL in Round 21 in 2015, O’Donnell made his return to football in Round 18 in the Development team’s 158-point win against Werribee.

O’Donnell played 6 games in the brown and gold this year, including a strong performance in the Development team’s Grand Final win.

Mirra and O’Donnell join Max Warren on the list of Box Hill’s significant re-signings for 2017, putting the club in good stead for the upcoming season.

General Manager of the Hawks Daniel Napoli spoke with boxhillhawks.com.au about the decisions of Mirra and O’Donnell to play on.

“We’re very excited that both David Mirra and Mitchell O’Donnell have re-signed for next year. Dave had an outstanding season for Box Hill in 2016, capped off with a deserving club senior best and fairest while Mitch showed tremendous drive to successfully return to football following surgery on his ruptured ACL.

“Both players are very important for our footy club on and off the field and we are delighted that they have committed to the Hawks for season 2017”.
