An update on the Box Hill/Hawthorn alignment

Over the past weeks the AFL has made a number of decisions in response to the outbreak of Covid-19.

One of these decisions was the suspension of both the AFL and VFL seasons until at least 31 May 2020. All AFL, state and local football clubs have had to move quickly and make difficult decisions across all aspects of their respective businesses in line with this suspension.

Box Hill Hawks and Hawthorn Football Club have enjoyed the longest running VFL-AFL alignment in history and intend to maintain the partnership, even in these most difficult of circumstances.

While Hawthorn are unable to provide support in the form of football talent for the foreseeable future, due to the necessary isolation of the club’s football program, it will continue to provide administrative support to Box Hill Hawks.

Box Hill Hawks President Ed Sill emphasised the clubs work in the pre-season and their commitment to being ready to play when the VFL season is able to commence.

“We have enjoyed a very successful alignment with Hawthorn since 2001, however given recent announcements, Box Hill Hawks look forward to fielding a strong team in the VFL competition in our own right,” said Sill.

“We are in a strong position off the field, and will continue to work closely with Hawthorn from an administration point of view.”

“We will be ready to go once we receive the green light to bounce the ball in season 2020.”

Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves said the longstanding relationship between the clubs is something Hawthorn is incredibly proud of.

“Our relationship is one based on mutual respect and we look forward to continuing to grow and strengthen our clubs into the future,” said Reeves.

“While we need to take a short break in 2020, we fully intended to return to the alignment bigger and better than ever when possible.”

As the Covid-19 situation continues to evolve rapidly, Box Hill Hawks will continue to keep its members and supporters updated regularly.
