2020 VFL Season cancelled

To the Box Hill Hawks community,

Unfortunately, the current events in Victoria in relation to COVID-19 has left AFL Victoria with no other choice than to cancel the 2020 VFL season.

A disappointing outcome, particularly for players, coaches and support staff alike who have constantly stepped up in recent times as the club navigated its way through a possible season start. The efforts have ended with no result however, we should be proud of the way our club has bonded together in the past few months. I know I am.

Whilst the need to lay blame will be strong at the moment, our club will instead be focusing on ways we can contribute to the community over the next six weeks. During the first lockdown, our playing group focussed on the need to ‘play their part’ by leading by example. The need to continue to play this role again has come into focus and I have no doubt our players and club will answer the call.

Additionally, we intend to start working with our club leaders in exploring ways we can initiate support of the mental health of our extended football club community. In the first instance, this will see a focus on the individuals mental health before gravitating towards support of our family, teammates and friends.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many front-line workers in our community that are playing their part in selflessly helping us fight this battle against COVID-19.

The battle with COVID-19 is far greater than a game of footy. Our season on-field is done, our responsibilities off-field have increased and we as a club look forward to confronting that challenge as community leaders should.

Go Hawks and Go Vics.
