The Hawks are headed for their first interstate game this season, and in a few years. It’ll be the first time the Hawks and the Suns have played for points in the Sunshine State since 2010.

Last meetings

Round 11, 2010: Box Hill 19.16 (130) defeated Gold Coast 11.8 (74) in Queensland.
Round 12, 2021: Box Hill 15.21 (111) defeated Gold Coast 5.9 (39) at Box Hill City Oval.

Last time we met the Gold Cost Suns it was on our turf in July of the 2021 season, so likely a different climate than what we’ll face this weekend on the Gold Coast.

Late July the Hawks led the Suns all day and were a few goals clear at each break, finishing with a ten-plus goal win. There were nine individual goal scorers for the brown and gold, but none more than Fergus Greene who managed to bag six.

The back six were a well-oiled machine with the likes of Stu Horner, Cal Porter and the Beasley brothers worked tirelessly, allowing just 14 scoring shots from 45 inside 50s.

How have we been going?

2022 Formline: L, L, W, W, L, W, W.

We had the bye last week in Round 9, but prior to that the Hawks had a great win over the Tigers at home in Round 8.

It was a close one for a majority of the game with Richmond leading at every change until the Hawks had an eight-goal blitz in last quarter to bring it home. The first of the term came within seconds as Cal Porter burst from the stoppage and put through a pearler.

In the end it was a 33-point victory for the Hawks, which sent us into the top 8 at the end of that round, in a big win for the club.

The Hawks best were Porter, James Blanck, Daniel Howe, Liam Shiels, Fergus Greene and Jackson Callow.

How have they been going?

The Suns sit with the same number of wins and losses as the Hawks, and most recently defeated Footscray Bulldogs at Whitten Oval.

Gold Coast trailed at only the quarter-time break by 11 points due to a combination of missed early chances and a strong start from their opposition. But they picked it up from there on out and managed to run out 25-point winners in a tight affair.

Their best on the day included Jeremy Sharp, Charlie Constable, Elijah Hollands, Hewago Paul Oea and Sam Day.

Team News

The team board has had a bit of a shuffle post-bye week, with some Box Hill faithful and Hawthorn lads coming into the squad and others heading out.

First and foremost, Captain Hugh Beasley is back in after his hamstring injury. And it could be a family affair, with younger brother Charlie Beasley named for his second official game with Box Hill, having made his debut for the club in our last clash with the Suns in 2021.

Also coming in is Vincent Adduci, who returns after a brief stint on the sidelines since Round 5 against Coburg, he’ll no doubt put his personality and skills on display up forward. As well as backman, Mason De Wit after missing the Richmond clash.

There’s also a potential opportunity for the young Max’s –  with Hall and Walton named to take on the Suns interstate.

As for Hawthorn-listed players, it’s the likes of James Worpel and Finn Maginness who come into the Box Hill line up.

And the outs include Stu Horner who went down with the hamstring injury during his stint as stand-in captain against the Tigers. While Hawthorn’s Daniel Howe and Liam Shiels have been elevated.

One to Watch

With Skipper, Hugh Beasley re-joining the side this week, it’s hard to look past him as our one to watch.

He’s looking back to his best after the hamstring and it’s obviously a welcome addition to have his skills and leadership back out on the field, rather than in the coach’s box or on the sidelines as he has been. Don’t get us wrong, he’s handy there too, but we prefer him on the field.

Beaser is bound to draw your attention without us having to tell you that he’s one to watch, but just in case, keep your eyes on our Captain, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
