Maloney Signs
The Box Hill Hawks are pleased to announce the re-signing of Tom Maloney for the 2018 season.
Maloney enjoyed a year of growth at Development level in 2017, playing all seventeen matches and capturing a hotly contested best and fairest – the final awarded in the Hawks’ storied Development program’s history – come season’s end.
Reflecting on his first twelve months at City Oval and his decision to re-sign, Maloney echoed the sentiments of many of his fellow teammates: confidence is, was and always will be key.
“As the season went on I grew in confidence and really came out of my shell, to the point where I was comfortable to take the game on.
“The Club as a whole has been great since I arrived and all of the opportunities available make for a pretty easy decision to re-sign.”
With the groundwork laid, the coming season is all about one thing.
“We’re all here to play senior footy and it’s something I’d love to do in 2018.
“Unfortunately I wasn’t able to crack into the senior side last season, but I’m really looking forward to getting a good pre-season under my belt over the coming months and putting my name forward to play senior footy.”
“The aim is to stay healthy throughout the whole pre-season so I can be in the mix come round one as a 23rd man.”
Maloney needn’t look far for inspiration, with a number of current teammates having tread the very same path in years past as he does now.
The likes of Anthony Brolic, Chris Jones, Billy Murphy, Brayden Kilpatrick, Nelson Lane, Vincent Adduci and Mitch O’Donnell have all seen positive Development form rewarded with senior opportunity.
As such, he is acutely aware that Box Hill are a club that recognises hard work and, should form warrant, provides it’s players every chance to step up and make their mark.
“What we’re working towards is really exciting and, personally, the fact that ‘Newy’ and his coaching staff aren’t afraid to give young blokes like myself a crack is really encouraging.”
