DEVELOPMENT: Hawks win minor premiership in Frankston
THE Box Hill Hawks have won the minor premiership in the Victoria Development League after defeating Frankston by 33 points – moving them three games clear at the top of the ladder with two rounds remaining.
Jake Summers kicked the first goal for the Hawks and the first of the match, but the remainder of the quarter seemed to be played on Frankston’s terms – and Box Hill trailed by four points at the quarter-time break.
“We need to play our brand of footy and get them on the back foot,” said head coach Matt Adolph at quarter-time.
Lachlan Langford and Jake Summers abided, kicking back-to-back goals midway through the quarter that seemed to get the gears rolling for Box Hill.
By half-time the Hawks had turned the deficit into a three-goal lead and were starting to play ‘the Box Hill way’.
Jake Summers began the third quarter by kicking his third goal, and would go on to finish the match with a game-high of four.
The lead had extended to an even four goals by the three-quarter-time break, but Adolph did not want the Hawks to feel complacent.
“Don’t let them back in it. Finish strong and make sure we beat them on work rate. ” he said.
Lochie Adey and Matthew Traynor were amongst the goals in the final term, and the Hawks kicked away to a 33-point win that has kept an undefeated season going.
“It was an intense game, but that intensity is only going to rise as we get closer to September. We need to make sure we continue to play team footy,” said Adolph.
