The Box Hill and Hawthorn Football Clubs are excited to announce the introduction of a women’s team into the 2017 Swisse VFL Women’s Competition.

In what is an exciting step forward in women’s football, the Box Hill Hawks women’s team will provide an extensive pathway for girls of the Eastern Region to the elite level of football.

With the rapid growth of women’s football, it is a great concept for both the Box Hill and Hawthorn Football Clubs. Box Hill Hawks General Manager Daniel Napoli was thrilled with the outcome.

“The Box Hill Hawks are very excited to be involved in women’s football in 2017 and moving forward. The club is looking forward to providing young women in our local community with a great opportunity to play at an elite level.

“We aim to provide a perfect pathway for those aspiring to become AFL footballers. We encourage all those Hawks supporters and everyone in the Whitehorse community to get behind both men and women and come along to show your support in season 2017.”

Box Hill President Tony Pinwill stated the team was a great result for the local community. “It’s fantastic to see that the City of Whitehorse now has a Women’s Football team playing state league football.”

“The Box Hill Hawks board are fully supportive of the women’s team and looks forward to continuing to work with the Hawthorn Football Club on this great initiative”.

The Hawks have appointed Patrick Hill to the role as inaugural head coach, after an extensive coaching career.

Hill was a development coach at the Box Hill Hawks in 2011, before becoming a senior assistant coach to Damian Carroll in 2012-2014. Hill was part of the 2013 Box Hill Premiership Team as well as the 2014 Grand Final side. In 2015, Hill became head coach of Frankston in the VFL where he coached for two seasons.

The Hawks will host a talent identification day on November 26th at Waverley Park. All young women over the age of 16 with the ambition to play VFL Football are encouraged to register their interest.

Further details and registration for the day can be found here.
